Having spent 15 years in the corporate environment, I have lost count on the number of days I have sat in a classroom and listened to leadership theories, lessons and discussion. While I believe training will always bring a new perspective and learning, I can’t help but feel that the time now; is for application of skills and real life experiences!

Before I continue, I know there will be critics that will argue that theory and classroom style teaching is still important. And I do agree, but I feel the dependency on this type of training is fading and a new way needs to be found on how to incorporate this.

Many organisations have adopted the 70-20-10 model for learning and development. The model states that individuals obtain 70 percent of their knowledge from job-related experiences, 20 percent from interactions with others, and 10 percent from formal educational events.

This model does give a good blend of hands on learning, coaching & mentoring, traditional and educational courses and has served its purpose in most instances.

However, in this day and age I would argue that the model doesn’t necessarily cater for the number of online learning platforms, digital platforms and the explosion of social media. More importantly, it comes back to the point that an organisation might well have a model to depict how they go about training and development, but I believe the debate now lies in – how well suited is it to enable implementation of learning’s and its relevance to today’s challenges.

And simply put that is why I’ve changed course and am now pursuing my passion; working with leaders at all levels to help them navigate through the ambiguity & disruption in the workplace. And most importantly in my opinion is being able to assist them to identify and understand the consequences of leadership decisions, this will help shape our future leaders and ensure people are at the forefront of enabling organizational performance.

So it’s a new journey, a dream and passion to help nurture a future leadership that will change the world! How I hear you ask……..simple, by one real life leadership simulation at a time!! #CYANPEOPLE
